Welcome

Iwatana-do Karate is a school of Okinawa Kenpo Karate, which has a long history and has evolved over the years to facilitate the needs of it's practitioners. You can study this history in more detail on the History Page. When Master Nakiyama brought it to the United States the public was hungry for the traditional form of martial arts and this style, which is soaked with tradition, was taught and learned with great enthusiasm. That was over 40 years ago.

Martial Arts in this country has evolved into a hodge-podge, eclectic, group of styles, whose practitioners may or may not be qualified to teach what they are teaching. This is due to several reasons and I will only mention one so as to make

the point. This country, over the last several decades, has developed a more transient population with people moving around several times in a lifetime, as opposed to pretty much staying fairly close to where they were born. This means a martial artist will change teachers each time he moves and rarely is the same style available and thus he has trained under several different styles. As the martial artist grows it is natural for the martial artist to blend what he has learned into a logical, homogenous format. This is the way new styles are born but one must be a true Master to do it right.

I am fortunate to have trained under Master James Lloyd for over 16 years and to have learned the art of Okinawa Kenpo as Master Nakiyama taught it to him. Master Lloyd has also taught me much of what he has learned from Master Tan Leong Keng, Grand Master of Loeng Choo Kempo which is a Chinese Kempo style. My heart belongs to Okinawa Kenpo, as they are my roots. My background consists of Okinawa Kenpo, Lau Hau Kenpo, Leong Choo Kempo, over 20 years of Law Enforcement and military combat training. I hold the rank of Ju-dan (10th Degree) and am the Mejin of Okinawa Kenpo Karate. I have attained Hachi-dan (8th Degree) in Lau Hau Kenpo and served as Kyoshi. I am on the Board of Directors for the American Martial Arts Renmei as Ju-dan representing Okinawa Kenpo Karate. Lastly I am continuing to learn.

Iwatana-do teaches Okinawa Kenpo Karate and addresses contemporary issues. My years in law enforcement has taught me the needs are no longer the same. Once you worried about being jumped, now you worry about being caught in a drive-by shooting. Once you worried about kids drinking, now you worry about drugs. The list goes on, what you once worried about is still there but new issues now compound the problems we faced. Iwatana was created to help address these new issues.

The Iwatana program consists of 3 equal parts, physical, mental and technique. The physical portion is an individually tailored, comprehensive program designed to maximize the effectiveness of self-defense skills. It includes healthy life style as well as strength and endurance. The mental portion covers awareness, self-discipline, the physics behind the skills, combat psychology, combat dynamics, and the philosophy of war and peace. The techniques are the actual skills that the physical portion facilitates and are used when and how the mental portion of the program dictates.
